THE FRANK MERCER FILES

The official explanation is the beginning, not the ending.

Frank Mercer starts with a verdict or explanation that has already made a death, disappearance or closed case seem settled. Accident. Suicide. Misadventure. Natural causes. A runaway. The point is not that every official conclusion must be wrong; it is that the conclusion itself tells Mercer what everybody was prepared to believe, and which detail stopped being questioned.

The series is grounded in Lancashire and the North-West because place can do investigative work. Reservoir levels, old roads, files, inquest records, work sites, distances and ordinary local geography can all determine what was possible. The landscape is not a postcard behind the crime. It is part of the case.
